KARACHI: In a bid to allay concerns of residents about covering Nehr-i-Khayyam with concrete, Local Government Minister Nasir Shah on Monday said that the project aimed at improving the drainage system and overall environment of Clifton.

During a visit to the site, he said that the Nehr-i-Khayyam Rehabilitation Project would help reduce foul odour, minimise health risks and improve the overall environment of the area.

He said that the chief minister took notice of the residents’ complaints regarding the construction activities. He clarified that the project was being undertaken by the Sindh Local Government Department and involved covering the drain and diverting sewage water to address sanitation-related problems in the area.

“A clean-water canal is also being developed as part of the beautification plan, while greenery and tree plantation will be introduced along its surroundings,” he said, according to a press release issued here.

The minister categorically stated that no encroachment or unrelated construction was taking place.

He said that the project would be completed within the stipulated two-month period.

Also on Monday, Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah presided over a meeting to review the Nehr-i-Khayyam project.

The Local Government Department informed the meeting that the project focused on preserving its historical and environmental significance and helping reduce urban flooding. The department also clarified that no commercial activities were envisaged under the project.
