CRITICAL CORRIDOR

CRITICAL CORRIDOR: Pakistan has the capacity to become a regional link to Central Asia, but security issues along with tensions with Afghanistan make regional and local trade routes sensitive and un-protected. Border clearance and customs processes are prolonged, and poor container scanning also creates problems in supervising cargo and preventing illegal traffic. The lack of railway connectivity is also a major barrier, as Pakistan and Central Asian countries have different railway gauge systems. Moreover, the lack of political involvement by Pakistani leaders has created tensions regarding the accomplishment of all connectivity projects. What is needed is a mechanism based on better security coordination, updated border installations, strong railway links and persistent political cooperation.

CURSE OF BORROWING: This is with reference to the report ‘Foreign loan inflows rise 24pc in July-August’ (Sept 23). One does not know if securing loans should be considered an achievement by the government. Most borrowed finances are used for non-development purposes. It seems that the only responsibility of the Ministry of Finance is to seek debts from every available source. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is already dictating policies, and more lenders can only mean more dictations. Downsizing of the ministry must, therefore, be considered. The government should do away with borrowings, and focus on self-reliance.

TOWN WITHOUT WATER: For the residents of Faqir Colony in Karachi’s Orangi Town, piped water has become a dream. The town has been deprived of water supply for almost a couple of decades even though adjacent areas have been receiving sufficient water all through these years. The tanker mafia appears to have taken charge of water management. Elected representatives, government officials, media personnel and civil society must come together to help the people get their fundamental right.
