BAJAUR: A policeman was martyred, and two civilians were injured when unidentified assailants opened fire on them in Bajaur district’s Khar tehsil here on Wednesday.

Police officials and residents said the incident occurred in the Lowi Sam area when unidentified attackers targeted a policeman near a basic health unit.

They told Dawn that the attack left the policeman and two civilians injured.

“Constable Noorullah was going home on a motorcycle when gunmen targeted him near the Lowi Sam BHU along the main Bajaur-Peshawar Road, injuring the cop, along with two other persons,” said DSP Saidur Rehman.

The official said the injured were rushed to the hospital where doctors pronounced the policeman, 43, dead.

He added that a team from Lowi Sam police station rushed to the scene and launched efforts to trace the attackers.

Mansoor Khan, a spokesperson for the district police, told Dawn that police launched a search operation to track the assailants.

The official said the police launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He added that the body was dispatched to his native area for burial after medico-legal formalities.

No one claimed responsibility for the killing, which occurred two days after another constable, Irshad Khan, was killed by unidentified assailants in the mountains of Barang tehsil.
