RAWALPINDI: Punjab government has set a target to cultivate wheat on 416,000 acres in the Rawalpindi district for 2026-27, asking the district administration to facilitate farmers.

A review meeting was held at the deputy commissioner office chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) retired Captain Tayyab Sami Khan to discuss potential measures for promoting wheat cultivation and increasing production.

The meeting reviewed steps being taken to boost wheat cultivation and yield. Officials from the Agriculture Department briefed the meeting, stating that a target had been set to cultivate wheat on 416,000 acres in the district during the 2026-27 season.

Measures have been implemented to ensure the availability of certified, high-quality wheat seeds for farmers. Oversight will be maintained regarding the availability, quality and sale at fixed rates of agricultural inputs, including urea and DAP.

An awareness campaign concerning modern wheat cultivation techniques, the use of balanced fertilizers and improved production strategies is currently underway. Programmes for farmer training and agricultural guidance are also being organised at the village level.

Effective measures are being taken to improve per-acre yield beyond the average of the last three years. Assessing the cultivated area and overall progress through village-level surveys following the sowing phase is also part of the set objectives.

Key objectives include the regular review of the wheat campaign’s implementation, the challenges faced and the achievement of targets; encouraging high-yielding farmers and promoting wheat cultivation through productivity competitions.
