LAHORE: A 20-year-old student was killed and two others were injured in an alleged clash between two groups of students of a private university in Multan at Nag Shah Chowk on Muzaffargarh Road on Friday.

The deceased student was identified as Anas, while the injured as Sameer (20) and Ali Akbar (21), studying in the law department of Multan University of Science and Technology (MUST).

As per the university sources, Anas and a computer science department student exchanged harsh words in the campus cafeteria on Friday morning. The security guards and teachers intervened and settled the dispute after negotiations with both students. However, after being dispersed, the two students and their supporters again gathered outside the campus gate.

An eyewitness told Dawn that the students were standing outside the campus when a car arrived there and a young man, who was covering his face, disembarked from the vehicle and opened fire at them.

Resultantly, Anas and two other students sustained bullet wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital. Later, Anas succumbed to his bullet wounds at the hospital.

Rescue 1122 ambulances shifted the body and the injured students to the Nishtar Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

According to the police report, the incident was a result of a dispute between the two groups of students.

Following the incident, a large number of people, including students, gathered outside the university and staged a protest demo, blocking the Muzaffargarh Road for traffic for several hours, and demanding the attacker’s immediate arrest. They also called for action against those responsible for the violence.

MUST Registrar Ghulam Hussain Jafir told Dawn that the students clashed outside the university, claiming that outsiders were involved in creating a law and order situation.

He said that the administration regrets the incident, but measures should be taken by the law enforcement agencies to stop such occurrences.

Muzaffarabad police SHO Sajad Hussain says further investigation and legal proceedings are underway.
