KARACHI: A suspected bike-snatcher was shot dead by an off-duty policeman on main Sharea Faisal on Thursday.
The Airport police said that a police officer, Ali Haider, posted at Korangi SSP office, was travelling through Madam Bridge near Wireless Gate.
He said three robbers were snatching a motorcycle from a citizen. The officer challenged them. In an ensuing exchange of firing, one suspect was gunned down while his two accomplices managed to escape from the spot.
The police have recovered one pistol along with rounds and a mobile phone from the custody of the deceased.
The body was shifted to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities, where his identity could not be ascertained immediately.
Suspected robber gunned down in Korangi ‘encounter’
A suspected robber was gunned down while four others were arrested after an alleged encounter in the Korangi area.
A police spokesperson said that four suspects riding two motorcycles had snatched a bag from two employees of a petrol pump the other day. The bag contained Rs6.2 million cash. CCTV footage of the incident had gone viral on social media.
Taking notice of the incident, DIG East Dr Farrukh Ali had directed Korangi SSP (Investigation) Mohammed Qais Khan to arrest the suspects while a technical team of the police was also mobilised.
Late on Wednesday night, a police party, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid in Irfani Goth, Bagh-i-Korangi. On seeing the police, the suspects resorted to firing.
In an ensuing exchange of gunfire, one armed suspect was gunned down. His four accomplices were arrested while their three other accomplices managed to escape from the spot by taking advantage of the darkness.
The deceased suspect was identified as Irfan Ali and the wounded suspects were Akram Sain Dino, Ashiq Ali and Mir Hasan.
Three pistols with loaded magazines, over Rs1 million cash, eight snatched cell phones and two motorcycles were recovered from their custody, claimed the police.
During the initial probe, it transpired that the same suspects had also shot at and wounded sub-inspector Rana Latif in 2013 in South District. The police have obtained the criminal records of both the deceased and injured suspects.
There were three FIRs against the killed suspect Irfan while there was one FIR against injured suspect Akram.
The body and the wounded were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
