KARACHI: Under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, the Sindh government has decided to partner with Education Management Organisations (EMOs) to improve the management and educational standards of 1,133 new and upgraded government schools across the province.
Consultations have been initiated with private-sector organisations and institutions with expertise in education to entrust them with the management of these schools, improvement of educational outcomes and achievement of defined performance targets.
In this regard, Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah chaired an important meeting with representatives of EMOs, private school managements, NGOs, education-sector operators in Sindh and non-formal education organisations.
The meeting discussed in detail the involvement of the private sector in the management of government schools, partnership mechanisms, school performance, educational outcomes and accountability systems. The meeting was informed that out of the 1,133 schools, 838 are part of the Sindh Secondary Education Improvement Project (SSEIP), while 295 schools are being developed under the SELECT programme.
The meeting was informed that these schools, being constructed with the support of the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, are being equipped with modern educational facilities, including classrooms, furniture, science laboratories, digital libraries, RO plants, solar systems and boundary walls, along with other essential facilities.
These schools are being established as modern educational campuses across 19 districts of Sindh, including Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Kambar-Shahdadkot, Thatta, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Sanghar, Sujawal, Matiari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Dadu, Ghotki, Tando Allahyar, Umerkot, Kashmore, Larkana, Jacobabad and Shikarpur, among others.
