UNITED NATIONS: India claimed in the UN General Assembly today [Oct 4] that the Security Council resolutions of 1948 and 1949 on Jammu and Kashmir had become “obsolete”. “In our opinion it is now entirely unrealistic to hark back to those resolutions”, Indian Foreign Minister Y.B. Chavan said. He was referring to Pakistan delegation leader Mr Aziz Ahmed’s speech in the General Assembly last week calling for resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the Security Council motions. However, he said the Simla agreement provided a “practical and realistic” basis for overcoming all impediments to friendly and cooperative relations between India and Pakistan. — News agencies
