TRADITIONAL CRAFT

TRADITIONAL CRAFT: Many districts in Sindh possess unique products and traditional skills that could generate substantial income for the locals if developed into modern industries and linked with international markets. For example, Hyderabad’s glass bangles, Shikarpur’s traditional pickles, Hala’s pottery and handicraft, Khairpur’s dates and Tharparkar’s embroidery and handicraft have significant potential for national and international markets. Instead of confining these activities to small cottage industries, the government and the private sector should join hands to establish modern production units, quality standards, packaging facilities, branding, export support and market linkages. With proper investment, these local products may become international brands, generate valuable export earnings, and create thousands of jobs.

GHOST TEACHERS: Ghost teachers continue to undermine the education system in remote and rural areas of Balochistan. These teachers are officially appointed and they receive regular salaries, but remain absent from their schools and do not perform their duties. Their prolonged absence deprives children of their basic right to education. The problem is particularly damaging in areas where educational facilities are already limited. The government must address teacher absenteeism through effective monitoring. Teachers who remain absent without valid reasons should face disciplinary action. Regular inspections, attendance and monitoring can also help ensure that schools function properly.

MYTH OF PRIVATISATION: If a state enterprise goes into crisis, the only solution that appears feasible in the eyes of our decision-makers is privatisation. This is what the International Monetary Fund (IMF) advises all struggling economies. The fact is that we do not need further privatisation. What we need is a complete overhaul of the economic structure.
