ISLAMABAD: Opposition alliance Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP) on Friday stepped up its campaign to reach out to other parties and convince them to participate in a multiparty conference (MPC), an initiative led by the PTI.

A TTAP delegation met the leadership of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), which accepted the invitation to attend the event.

The TTAP delegation included Leader of the Opposition in Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and PTI leaders Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Asad Qaiser.

They met JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman and other leaders. During the meeting, they focused on the political situation in the country, particularly developments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A statement issued by TTAP later said the participants stressed the “need to make communication and consultation among democratic and political forces more effective to promote political stability, strengthen democratic traditions and ensure the supremacy of the Constitution and law”.

Addressing the media after the meeting, the JI chief said his party would not support the government’s move to suspend the Constitution, impose governor’s rule or declare an emergency in KP.

He added that political parties needed to sit together and resolve the country’s problems through dialogue.

Naeemur Rehman added that the JI stood with all political forces seeking the restoration of the political process, protection of fundamental rights and continuation of democratic activity.

Speaking to the media, Mr Abbas said better decisions could be reached through consultation on national issues.

Barrister Gohar thanked Hafiz Naeem and the JI leadership for accepting the MPC invitation and supporting PTI’s demands.

In a separate meeting, under the leadership of Mr Abbas, a TTAP delegation met former prime minister and chairman of the Awam Pakistan Party, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, at his residence.

“During the meeting, a detailed exchange of views took place on the country’s overall political situation, the democratic process, the supremacy of the Constitution, and national issues,” according to a TTAP statement. The delegation also invited Mr Abbasi to participate in the MPC.

Separately, Sajid Tareen, the central senior vice president of the Balochistan National Party (BNP), strongly condemned any potential imposition of governor’s rule in KP or attempts to dismantle the province’s Form-45-backed elected government and chief minister. Addressing a press conference in Quetta, he also announced his party’s full support for the PTI’s march scheduled for Oct 4.
