Two more hanged in Gujranwala

GUJRANWALA, July 26: Two prisoners convicted of committing a double murder were hanged in the jail here on Wednesday.

Reports said that Abdul Rashid and Muhammad Rafiq had killed their cousins — Ijaz Ahmad and Muhammad Ashiq — over a trifle in Sabzi Mandi area in September 1983.

The district and sessions judge handed down them the death sentence. The Lahore High Court and the apex court had upheld the decision while the president had also rejected their clemency appeals.

The jail authority handed over the bodies to their heirs. It may be mentioned that both the deceased remained in jail for 13 long years.

KIDNAPPED: A first year student was kidnapped by four car riders in Kot Shahan on the GT Road in Cantonment area on Wednesday.

Shahid Iqbal, student of Government College Gujranwala, was on his way to the cattle market along with his uncle when he was kidnapped.

Police have registered a case against accused Abdul Salam, Abdullah, Ashfaq and Tahir and are investigating.

FACILITIES: At least 100 beds, 1,000 bed-sheets and 24 wheelchairs will be provided to 24 wards of DHQ Hospital besides equipping cardiology ward and trauma center with air-conditioners, fans and other facilities.

DCO Manzer Hayat revealed this while speaking at a meeting of doctors during his visit to the DHQ Hospital here on Wednesday.

He said that necessary arrangements had been made to purchase medicines and X-ray film machines at a cost of Rs5 million.

Taking a serious notice of unhygienic conditions at the hospital, he directed medical superintendent Javed Ahmad to look them up within a week.

The DCO also took a round of various wards and inquired after the health of patients.

MEETING: The Punjab Boards Committee of Chairman (PBCC) took some important decisions regarding the examination at a meeting held in the office of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education here on Wednesday.

This was stated by a spokesman of the education board.
