SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: Armed assailants killed two men, including a health department clerk, in the Gangikhel area of Wana tehsil of Lower South Waziristan district on Friday evening, police said.

District police officer Shah Hassan told Dawn over the phone that the deceased were travelling by motorcycle from Wana Rustam Bazaar to their homes in Sheen Warsak when armed men opened fire on them near Gangikhel Stop.

He said both men sustained multiple bullet wounds and died on the spot. The deceased were identified as Abdullah and Nawar Khan.

According to the DPO, Abdullah was serving as a clerk at the district health officer’s office in Wana. He said both the deceased belonged to the Karmazkhel clan of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe.

The police official said the attackers fled the scene after the shooting.

A police team reached the area and launched an investigation into the incident.

The bodies were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Wana for postmortem examinations, he said.

Mr Hassan said police had registered a preliminary report and initiated an investigation to determine the motive behind the killings and identify the assailants.

The DPO said that police had received information that the deceased were involved in a land dispute with some members of their own tribe.

He said investigators were examining all possible aspects of the incident, including the reported land dispute, to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
