Inam, Yasir in last eight

KARACHI, July 25: Fifth seed Inam Gul and eighth seed Yasir Khan were extended by their opponents before they advanced into the last eight of the men’s singles of Arif Habib Tennis Championship at Karachi Club on Tuesday.

Inam, who hails from Peshawar, dropped the opener 5-7 but recovered to claim the next two sets 6-1, 6-4 against Hasan Mahmood. Similarly, Yasir, youngest of the Khan clan, struggled for over two hours in overcoming Shaheryar Wali 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Top seed Aqeel Khan took little time in disposing off Samad Baloch 6-0, 6-2 while second seed Asim Shafiq beat Adnan Khan 7-5, 6-2.

Joining the above four in quarterfinals were Nomi Qamar, Jalil Khan, Tanveer Muneer and Wasif Cheema. Yasir registered his second victory of the day when he downed Hasan Ahmad 6-2, 6-1 to march into juniors U-17 singles quarterfinals.

In the only match of women’s singles, Lahore Saba Aziz was home 6-2, 6-1 against Aliya Hai.
