QUETTA: The Balochistan Zamindar Action Committee has demanded adequate supply of fertiliser in the province to end its shortage and payment of compensation to farmers hit by recent rains and floods in Balochistan. The committee gave the government until September 15 to fulfil its demands.
Speaking at press conference in Killa Saifullah, committee chairman Malik Naseer Ahmed Shahwani warned that failure to meet demands of farmers would not only affect growers but also labourers, transporters, commission agents and others.
The committee demanded effective monitoring at entry and exist points of check posts at borders to stop illegal inflow of tomatoes, apples, grapes, onions and other goods coming from neighbouring countries. The farmers also demanded increased fertiliser quotas, uninterrupted supplies of urea and nitrogen fertilisers and action against those traders who were involved in hoarding and creating artificial shortage of fertilizer.
The committee also demanded fresh surveys of losses caused by floods, heavy rains and strong winds between 2022 and 2026.
It expressed concern over electricity shortages in rural areas after solarisation.
