MUZAFFARABAD, July 22: The ruling Muslim Conference here on Saturday won seven of the eight reserved seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly, giving it two-third majority in the 49-member house.

The election for the seats, five of which are reserved for women and one each for technocrats, religious scholars and overseas Kashmiris, was held in the LA building here.

The result was announced by AJK election commissioner Shaikh Mohammad Naseem, who was presiding officer.

Former LA speaker Abdul Rasheed Abbasi of the MC was elected against the seat reserved for technocrats. He secured 30 votes and his rival, Nishat Kazmi, of the Jammu-Kashmir People’s Party got 11 votes.

Sahibzada Attiqur Rehman Faizpuri of the MC was elected against the seat reserved for religious scholars by securing 29 votes. His rivals, Fazlur Rasool of the People’s Party AJK and Altaf Mahboob of the PML, obtained 10 and two votes, respectively.

Mahmood Riaz of the MC was declared successful against the seat reserved for overseas Kashmiris. The UK-based leader obtained 27 votes and his rival, Mallick Israrullah, of the PPAJK bagged 14 votes.

Against the five reserved seats for women, Shazia Khatoon of the PPAJK got eight votes, Shamim Mallick, Naheed Tariq and Mehrun Nisa of the MC bagged seven votes each, Nasreen Rani of the MC secured six votes, Gulzar Fatima of the PML and Asma Aashiq of the MC, Haqiqi group, got three votes each.

The MC now has 31 members in the assembly. It had won 21 seats in direct elections and later three independent candidates had also joined the party.
