MANSEHRA: The district administration on Monday put all relevant departments on high alert and directed residents living along rivers and streams to remain vigilant as the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued glacial lake outburst floods (Glof) warnings for mountainous parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“You should be ready to respond in case of any emergency across the district, as the PDMA has warned of Glof incidents during the ongoing week due to a rise in temperature and rains,” Asad Mehmood Lodhi, additional deputy commissioner (relief and human rights), told a meeting here on Monday.

“As glaciers in the high-altitude parts of the district, including Kaghan and Siran valleys, are expected to melt due to the prevailing hot conditions, the residents living along rivers should be asked to relocate to nearby safer places as there is a likelihood of flash floods,” Mr Lodhi said.

He also directed Rescue 1122 and tehsil administrations to remain on standby to effectively cope with any emergency triggered by inclement weather or Glof incidents anywhere in the district.

Meanwhile, the Upper Kohistan district administration issued a weeklong warning about possible Glof incidents in mountainous parts of the district and advised families living along rivers and streams to remain vigilant against flash floods.

“According to the Met department, mountainous parts of the district are under constant threat of flooding and a surge in water levels due to glacial lake outburst phenomenon and rains,” a press release issued by the administration said.

It advised people to avoid going near rivers and streams and shift their livestock to higher-altitude areas until September 4, as temperatures are expected to rise in the mountainous parts of the district during this period.
