ISLAMABAD: A security official could face disciplinary action following reports of a scuffle at Islamabad’s Sarhad University of Science and Information Technology (SUSIT).

The individual in question allegedly discharged a weapon during a scuffle with protesters at the university’s Chattha Bakhtawar campus near Rawat, where students had been agitating against the dismissal of a senior official and other issues.

While there was no official word from police or the military, sources close to the investigation said the uniformed individual had been taken into custody and would face disciplinary action.

A video of the incident, shared widely on social media, shows a uniformed individual approaching a group of young men. He is accompanied by a woman, said to be his wife, who is also part of the university faculty.

He can be seen striking one of the students with a stick and exchanging heated words with the protesters, after which a scuffle breaks out. An angry crowd surrounds the officer, and some individuals appear to assault him, following which he draws a pistol and points it at the crowd.

The woman accompanying him appears to try to stop him, but the man then points the weapon into the air and discharges it, at which several police officers approach and encircle him.

Sources said the uniformed individual reached the varsity to rescue his spouse after she was allegedly harassed by the protesting students.

In a later video, a senior Islamabad police official can be seen addressing protesters, and telling them that the individual in question was escorted away by police. The officer can also be heard assuring students that he will be dealt with strictly and swiftly under military disciplinary procedures.
