KARACHI: The Sindh Animal Disease Surveillance Centre (SADSC) has recently conducted the province’s first-ever necropsy, a post-mortem examination, performed on a pet cat, marking a milestone in the development of animal healthcare services.

The post-mortem of Leonadas, a two-month-old Persian cat, was carried out by SADSC veterinary experts.

The centre is part of the Sindh Institute of Animal Health (SIAH) working under the livestock and fisheries department.

According to officials, the ‘comprehensive scientific’ examination revealed critical pathological indicators, including pulmonary oedema, liver enlargement, blood accumulation in the peritoneal cavity and evidence of an adverse immunogenic reaction.

“After a thorough analysis, experts concluded that the animal’s death had occurred due to a mismatched blood transfusion,” officials shared.

In a message, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah hailed the effort, describing it as a success of the government’s continued investment in strengthening veterinary infrastructure, disease surveillance, and scientific research capabilities across the province.

“It reflects the Sindh government’s commitment to modernising the livestock and animal health sector through science, innovation, and institutional strengthening. The facilities such as SADSC are playing a crucial role in disease surveillance, timely diagnosis, and evidence-based veterinary care,” he said.

He congratulated the SADSC team and livestock and fisheries department officials including Minister Muhammad Ali Malkani, secretary Dr Kazim Jatoi, director general SIAH Dr Nazeer Kalhoro and director research Dr Benazir Kanwal.
