KARACHI: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party leader and Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani has categorically rejected calls for creation of new provinces to be carved out from Sindh, saying there was a broad consensus among political parties that there is no need for another province.

“Those talking about dividing Sindh and creating new provinces have no understanding of the geography and ground realities of Sindh,” he said while speaking to reporters after the inauguration of the TMC English Medium Model School (Shaheed Najeeb Ahmed Campus), in Korangi.

According to a press release, the minister said people advocating the division of Sindh might have their own political interests and agendas, but they should not create hatred among the people of the province for their vested interests.

When asked to comment about Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s recent statement about the possibility of creating more provinces, Mr Ghani said that Mr Naqvi had “no authority to speak on the division of Sindh”.

Minister Saeed Ghani claims Jamaat, JUI-F, PTI and PML-N will also oppose division of province

To another question, he said that the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) was “not the institution responsible for deciding whether new provinces would be created”.

Mr Ghani, who is also the president of the Karachi chapter of the ruling PPP, claimed that all political parties in Sindh, including the Jamaat-i-Islami, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and PML-N, would oppose the division of the province.

He urged the MQM leadership to “come to its senses” and refrain from pushing people towards hatred and confrontation.

He said a sense of unity had emerged in Sindh after a long time and urged those appearing on television to consider the consequences of their statements.

Earlier, addressing the inauguration ceremony, he praised the PPP-backed Korangi town chairman for establishing an IT institute and developing parks, sports grounds and educational facilities.
