NEW DELHI: Over a dozen persons were injured yesterday [Aug 16] morning in Delhi when a Hindu crowd attacked a Muslim butcher and his supporters for selling buffalo meat which the crowd insisted was beef. The timely arrival of the police stopped what might have developed into a major conflict. The Muslim butcher from Qassabpura slaughtered three buffalo calves at home because the slaughter house was closed for Independence Day. He took the meat to Chhatta in Farashkhana for sale. Some Hindus surrounded the shop insisting the meat was beef. The large crowd which collected finally attacked the butcher and his supporters.

A medical officer who examined the meat declared it to be buffalo meat. The situation in the area became normal soon after.

[As reported by a staff correspondent from Karachi,] the rate of influx of Muslim refugees from Bharat through Khokhrapar has mounted to 475 per day, it is reliably learnt. During the four days ending August 14, 1,900 Bharati Muslims are reported to have crossed the border. The total number of refugees from Bharat entering West Pakistan through Khokhrapar in August is stated to be 4,200.
