SRINAGAR, July 19: Two policemen and a six-year-old boy were among six people killed in a fresh surge of violence in occupied Kashmir that also saw a bloody shooting near a revered shrine, police said on Wednesday.

“A Sikh policeman posted near the shrine of Hazratbal was shot dead from point blank by suspected militants,” a spokesman said.

None of the militant groups claimed responsibility for the shooting near the Hazratbal mosque in Srinagar.

It houses a relic of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The relic is shown to devotees on important days of the Islamic calendar and was scheduled to be displayed on Wednesday. In Soura locality, another policeman was killed by suspected rebels.

A six-year-old boy, Mohammed Asif, died in crossfire between militants and security forces in Udhampur, the spokesman said.

He said a man was killed by suspected rebels in the same district. Troops shot dead two militants in Pulwama and Poonch.—AFP
