KARACHI: Police on Thursday arrested Malik Fayyaz, the vice chairman of a Lyari union council, in a case pertaining to the August 10 firing on the office of MNA Qadir Patel in Clifton.

The police said that MNA Patel was sitting in his office in the IBA Apartments, Block-5, Clifton, when a white Toyota Fortuner arrived and its occupant fired seven/eight shots towards the office at about 02:30am.

Three bullets struck the main gate but did not penetrate across it. Two bullet fragments were also recovered from the gate, the police said.

The Boat Basin police registered a case under Sections 324, 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act and launched an investigation.

The police said that CCTV footage was examined and geo-fencing data was obtained. The vehicle did not have a registration number plate but through the footage and tracker data analysis, it was established that the vehicle bore registration No. BK-0145 and belonged to Malik Fayyaz, who is also a former DMC chairman, they claimed, and stated that the vehicle was taken into custody and Mr Malik was arrested.
