KARACHI: A woman was killed and her male companion was injured when a Karachi University bus hit a motorcycle near a pedestrian bridge along Sharea Faisal on Thursday.
SHO Qurban Ali Channa of the Bahadurabad police station told Dawn that the victims were rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where Ms Sawera, 17, died during treatment.
He said the bus driver, Mehmood Javed, was arrested and the bus was impounded.
A traffic police officer told Dawn that the accident occurred at about 7pm. The bus (bearing registration No. E-3099) was moving towards the airport, he said, and added that motorcycle driver “lost control over his vehicle while overtaking the bus”. The two-wheeler fell on the ground and the bus ran over the woman, who sustained serious injuries, the police officer said.
Commenting on violation of safety standards by drivers of different vehicles along a high-speed corridor like Sharea Faisal, a traffic police officer said that such points mostly have lane merging and sudden application of brakes by motorcyclists would increase the risk of an accident.
Citing several contributory factors, a traffic police report suggested a review of lane markings and signage near the pedestrian bridge to improve safety of commuters.
Van-car collision
A teenage woman was killed in a collision between a van and a car along the newly built Sharea Bhutto on Wednesday evening. Eleven other people were injured in the accident.
Korangi Industrial Area SHO Hukum Dad said that the van was carrying a family.
He said the Prado car hit the van from behind near Sharea Bhutto toll plaza.
All the injured persons were transported to the JPMC where Ms Rameen Lalu, 18, was pronounced dead. The car driver managed to escape from the spot, leaving behind his vehicle, which was impounded by the police. Efforts were underway to arrest him, the police officer said.
He said the condition of injured persons was stated to be out of danger.
An Edhi Foundation spokesperson identified the injured persons as Ashu Pishu, 30, Lalu Dewa, 57, Tulsee Veero, 45, Kaishi Naro, 37, Kaishi Waria, 13, Lakshami Tulsi, 40, Asha Gopi, 12, Hina Lalu, 8, Dhani Mega, 16, Shamu Lalu, 25. A 50-year-old injured woman could not be identified immediately.
