KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued notices to the home department, police, Rangers and other respondents on a petition seeking the whereabouts of two persons.

A two-judge constitutional bench of the SHC headed by Justice Muhammad Saleem Jessar also put the advocate general Sindh, the prosecutor general Sindh and the special prosecutor of Pakistan Rangers Sindh on notice for Aug 27.

Citing the province of Sindh through the secretary of home department, provincial police chief, director general Sindh Rangers, Karachi police chief and various other police officers concerned as respondents, Imran Haider Jaffri petitioned the SHC and asserted that his brother Adnan Haider Jaffri and Adnan’s colleague Shaikh Khalid Ahmed were taken away from a guest house in Defence Housing Authority on July 26.

He also contended that both alleged detainees were working at a guest house in DHA Phase-II. He added that they were picked up and taken away by unknown armed persons under mysterious circumstances. The alleged abductors were travelling in two vehicles resembling police vans, accompanied by other private vehicles, while one of them appeared to be a police officer.

The petitioner further argued that the unknown persons had also forcefully removed the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and digital video recorder (DVR) installed at the guest house.

He alleged that the armed men had tortured and harassed everyone present at the guest house, snatched their mobile phones and took away money besides forcibly dragging both alleged detainees into the vehicles.

He also argued that the family members of both men had approached the police station concerned, but the police had denied the arrest of the alleged detainees. Therefore, they filed written complaints to the Sindh IG regarding the disappearance of both men and requested that all necessary steps under the law be taken, but no meaningful action was initiated by the respondents to trace the whereabouts of the detainees.

The petitioner sought a directive for the respondents to disclose the whereabouts of the detainees and produce them before the SHC. He also pleaded for an impartial and independent inquiry into the incident to fix responsibility.
