PESHAWAR: Two policemen sustained minor injuries when an improvised explosive device targeting a police van went off near Pir Zakori Bridge on the GT Road within the jurisdiction of Gulbahar police station here on Sunday afternoon, a senior official said.

“The driver of the police van and a constable sustained minor injuries. It was a roadside IED explosion, and the bomb was planted in the greenbelt [next to the vehicle],” Peshawar Senior Superintendent of Police Farhan Khan told Dawn.

He said the Bomb Disposal Unit was busy scanning the greenbelt for other devices, adding that both cops received minor injuries.

Peshawar Capital City Police Officer Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed also visited the blast site and later met the injured at the Lady Reading Hospital, who were identified as constables Haider Ali and Yousaf, according to a statement issued by the city police.

Convoy of N. Waziristan DC, DPO attacked; assault on Mohmand checkpost repulsed

In North Waziristan, unidentified armed men opened fire on the convoy of the deputy commissioner and district police officer in Miranshah during an official visit to Boya tehsil on Sunday, police said, adding that both officers remained unhurt.

According to police, Deputy Commissioner Taimoor Khan Afridi and DPO Sajjad Hussain were visiting Boya during the curfew to review the overall security situation in the area.

During the visit, the two officials also inspected the proposed site for a new police station, and directed the relevant authorities to complete preliminary arrangements to strengthen the police presence in the area.

Police said the deputy commissioner and the DPO later left for the government chromite plant in Mohammadkhel when unidentified armed men, who had allegedly taken positions along the route, opened fire on their convoy.

Security personnel accompanying the officials immediately responded by taking protective measures, preventing the attackers from causing any casualties, police said.

Following the attack, the officials cancelled their visit to the chromite plant due to security concerns and returned to Miranshah.

In Mohmand, the police repulsed an attack by militants on the Kharai Dara police checkpost in the Ambar police station late Sunday, forcing the assailants to retreat after an exchange of fire, officials said.

They said a group of militants attempted to storm the checkpost, but personnel responded swiftly, thwarting the attack and preventing the militants from breaching the facility.

District Police Officer Raza Mohammad rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the attack. He personally led a search-and-comb operation in the surrounding mountainous terrain.

Police officials said the attackers fled towards neighbouring Bajaur district through the Khemor mountain range.

In Dera Ismail Khan, terrorists attacked the Daraban police station on Saturday night, but fled the scene when the cops returned fire, officials said on Sunday.

They said the attackers used modern weapons during the assault.

A search operation was launched in the surrounding areas to trace the attackers.
