SAHIWAL: After an eight-hour operation, Rescue 1122 pulled two labourers alive from an old well where they had been buried nearly 30 feet beneath bricks and mud while dismantling the structure near Adda Booti Pall on Old Harappa Road.
Reports said Rao Sadaqat had hired the two men to extract bricks from the abandoned dry well. Eyewitnesses said the labourers were removing bricks from the well’s wall when a large mass of mud suddenly collapsed, burying them under debris.
Rescue 1122 teams reached the site at around 10:45am. District Emergency Officer Zafer Khalid said three rescue vehicles, a heavy crane and more than a dozen rescuers were immediately dispatched.
Deputy Commissioner Samiullah Farooq also visited the site to oversee the rescue operation.
After nearly eight hours of continuous efforts, rescuers successfully pulled both labourers out alive. They were identified as Muhammad Asif, 35, a resident of Kacha Kho, and Allah Rakha, 15, of village 10/AR in Khanewal district.
Villagers said both men were conscious despite suffering injuries and shock when they were shifted to Sahiwal Teaching Hospital. Hospital sources said their condition is stable and both are recovering.
Mr Khalid said air pockets created by fallen bricks and wet mud allowed oxygen to reach the trapped workers, enabling them to survive for several hours underground.
