KARACHI: Three suspects were gunned down during an alleged encounter in the Malir area on Friday, officials said.
They said a joint operation was conducted by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the police and Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, against criminals linked to the Samad Kathiawari gang of extortionists.
In a statement, SIU SSP Dr Samiullah Soomro identified the dead as Shah Rukh Khan alias Jugno, Raghib Ali Mirza and Ali Hamza and said their fourth associate, Waseem Ahmed Mughal, was arrested in a wounded condition.
He said that the suspects were on their way to target a mall again when a joint SIU-Rangers team raided their hideout. However, the suspects opened fire on law enforcers. An exchange of gunfire took place in which the trio was killed and the fourth arrested.
According to the SIU, Samad Kathiawari had recently issued extortion demands to members of the business community in Manghopir, Surjani Town, Gulberg and Malir.
The SIU said both the deceased and the arrested suspects were habitual offenders who had previously been arrested in cases involving extortion and street crime.
