PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLBEING

Published Updated

PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLBEING: In recent years, we have made remarkable progress in understanding physical health, but mental health often remains in the shadows. Psychological wellbeing is equally important for a healthy, functioning society. Unfortunately, stigma and misinformation still prevent many from seeking help, leading to silent suffering. Research consistently shows that early intervention in mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, can significantly improve recovery outcomes. Schools, workplaces and community centres should integrate mental health awareness programmes, provide access to counselling, and normalise conversations about emotional wellbeing. It is high time we treated mental health with due urgency.

YOUNG DEATHS: The recent deaths of children under falling rooftops or after engaging in dangerous activities are a painful reminder that negligence can turn routine moments into grief. Although the Punjab government has introduced various regulations and safety measures, legis-lation alone is not enough. The government, educational institutions and civil society organisations should jointly arrange symposiums, workshops and awareness campaigns to educate parents and children about the dangers of unsafe practices and the importance of vigilance. Parents and community leaders must realise that protecting children is a collective res-ponsibility. A nation that fails to protect its children only risks losing its future.

REMEMBERING A MARTYR: The nation recently paid homage to Hawaldar Lalak Jan Shaheed, the hero of Kargil War. He embraced martyrdom on July 7, 1999. Hawaldar Lalak Jan had volunteered himself to be posted on the frontlines against the enemy. He bravely faced artillery bombardment and repelled several attacks boldly till his last breath. He was awarded Nishan-i-Haider, which is Pakistan’s highest military award, for his courage and supreme sacrifice.
