PMD forecasts wet weekend in northern regions

RAWALPINDI: The Pa­­k­istan Mete­o­r­ological De­­partment (PMD) has forecast a wet weekend in the upper parts of the co­­untry and warned heavy rain may cause urb­an flo­oding in Islamabad, Raw­alpindi, Peshawar, Laho­­re, Gujranwala and Faisal­abad on Saturday (today) and Sunday.

It also urged the relevant authorities to remain vigilant, stating mo­­ist currents from the Arabian Sea were penetrating the upper areas and were likely to streng­then by Saturday evening.

AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan

Rain, wi­­n­dstorms and thundershowers, with isolated heavy rainfall, have been forecast for Ne­­elum Valley, Muzaf­far­abad, Raw­a­lakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Su­­dhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur in Azad Jammu and Kashmir as well as in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar from July 10 to 13.

Islamabad and Punjab

Meanwhile, scattered rain, windstorms and thundershowers, with isolated heavy rainfall, are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mur­­ree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhel­­um, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujran­wala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Faisalabad, Khushab, Sargodha, Lahore, Sheikhu­pura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot and Okara on Saturday and Sunday.

These weather conditions are expected to extend to Noor Pur Thal, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Layyah, Bahawalpur, Bahaw­alnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Rahim Yar Khan and Rajanpur from Saturday night into Sunday.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Similar wea­t­h­­er conditions are expected in Dir, Chit­ral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowsh­era, Charsadda, Karak, Tank, Lakki Mar­­wat, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Bu­­ner, Ko­­hat, Kurram, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Waziristan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbott­abad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan and Han­gu on July 12.

Balochistan, Sindh

Isolated rain and windstorms have been forecast for Zhob, She­rani, Kohlu, Barkhan, Dera Bugti and Khu­­zdar districts of Balochistan on Saturday and Sunday, while Sindh is expected to experience mai­nly hot and very humid weather.Isolated showers have been forecast in Tharparkar, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Lar­kana, Dadu and Jacobabad on July 12 and 13.

It warned that landslides could occur in vulnerable areas of upper KP, GB and AJK on Saturday and Sunday. It added that water flow could increase in local streams in AJK, KP and GB and Dera Ghazi Khan.

Heavy rain could also trigger localised urban flooding in Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad on July 12 and 13.
