Benazir not to meet JI leader

Published July 13, 2006

LAHORE, July 12: Jamaat-i-Islami secretary-general Syed Munawwar Hasan’s visit to London to discuss the possibility of cooperation between the MMA and the ARD is not expected to yield desired results as PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto is too busy to spare time for a meeting with him.

Mr Hasan’s meeting with PML-N leader Mian Nawaz Sharif, if it takes place, will be of no significance as the two sides have already similar views on the political situation in the country.

Makhdoom Amin Fahim told Dawn from London that Ms Bhutto had nominated him for a meeting with the visiting JI leader. But, he said, he would be able to meet Mr Hasan after July 19, the day Ms Bhutto would be presiding over an important party meeting.

The Jamaat leader said he was scheduled to return to Pakistan on Sunday (July 16).

Mr Fahim is returning to Pakistan for two days — July 14 and 15. Then, on July 16 he will go to London for party meetings.
