KARACHI: Funeral prayers of a Karachi businessman, who was shot dead in an armed attack in Dasht, Balochistan, while returning home with his family after a trip to Quetta, were held at a mosque on Tariq Road on Sunday.

Reports said the deceased, Ali Jameel, who ran a mobile phone business in Karachi, had travelled to Quetta with his wife and two daughters.

While returning home in their car on Friday night, the family reportedly lost their way after being misdirected by a navigation app and strayed off the National Highway into the Kand area of Dasht, where some unidentified persons signalled them to stop. When Jameel did not comply, they opened fire, killing him on the spot and wounding his wife.

However, their two daughters, who were also in the vehicle, remained safe.

The body was brought to Karachi on Sunday, and the funeral prayers were held at Rehmania Mosque on Tariq Road, which a large number of members of the business community also attended.

The incident drew widespread condemnation from all walks of life.

The Karachi Mobile and Electronics Dealers Association condemned the incident and demanded the immediate arrest of the killers.

Also, Haleem Adil Sheikh, president of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Sindh chapter, paid a visit to the residence of the deceased on Sunday and condemned the incident and termed it a “national tragedy.”

Speaking to the media, Mr Sheikh said the deceased believed he was travelling safely within his own country with his family and had never imagined that a wrong turn could leave him vulnerable to a “terrorist attack”.

Mr Sheikh said that while digital navigation services such as Google Maps could occasionally direct travellers onto the wrong route, it remained the state’s responsibility to ensure the safety and security of its citizens.

He demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the attack, and called for the perpetrators to be awarded the strict punishment under the law to deter similar acts of terrorism in the future.

He urged law enforcement agencies to restore peace and security across the country to prevent such incidents from recurring.
