HYDERABAD: Qaumi Awami Tehreek (QAT) President Ayaz Latif Palijo has said that neither the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) nor the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) is serious in playing their role with regard to a drastic cut in Sindh’s share in the Indus water.

Strongly criticising Punjab for taking away Sindh’s share through link canals, he deplored that the PPP and MQM-P lawmakers, instead of raising their voice over the issue, “using the assembly’s floor for point-scoring”.

In a press statement, Mr Palijo accused both parties and the Sindh government of “threatening unity of Sindh”.

He said that Punjab had already sold out its three rivers, and now it was “committing a dacoity” on Indus water.

He cited the relevant provisions of the international law that recognised lower riparian’s the first right to river water, and pointed out that the farming community and common people in Sindh were facing a severe shortage of water.

He said that instead of ensuring a fair distribution of water, am artificial shortage was being created to damage Sindh’s agricultural economy. He also accused those belonging to the ruling party of stealing water at canals’ head and through illegal diversion of flows in watercourses and distributaries. He said that small growers were not being given water.
