Exploitation in schools

THERE are two matters that need to be looked into by all concerned. After school exams are over and students wait for results, most schools ‘invite’ students to a one-dish party in which every student has to bring one food item sufficient for 10-12 persons. This practice causes undue stress in many a household.

Another matter is the regular, though often slight, change in textbooks every year, compelling parents to buy entirely new sets that cost thousands of rupees. Earlier, textbooks used to be passed on by older siblings or cousins to younger ones. Changes were made only when meaningful and necessary.

Annual small changes with apparent attempts to profit from this practice are another source of stress for most households. School principals and relevant government officials need to give these matters a serious thought and take corrective measures so that the education system may focus on taking the country forward.
