9th Muharram mourning processions conclude peacefully

PESHAWAR: Ninth of Muharram was peacefully observed across the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as mourning processions were taken out in several districts of the province to commemorate the martyrs of Karbala.

In provincial capital, the main procession of ninth Muharram was taken out from Imambargah Hussania Hall in Peshawar Saddar, which peacefully concluded after passing through its designated route. Another procession was taken out from Imambargah Bargah Bibi Sahiba in Mohallah Bibi Zakiria located in Pesahwar tehsil, which also concluded peacefully after passing through its designated route.

In addition to this, at least 16 alam processions were to be taken out from as much number of Imambargahs, which would culminate just before morning prayers at the same place after passing through designated route.

KP governor Faisal Karim Kundi visited the ninth Muharram procession at Naeem Shah Chowk in Peshawar Cant. Mr Kundi on this occasion, according to a governor house statement, reviewed the security and other arrangements made for the mourners.

Talking to media persons on the occasion, the governor said that police had made excellent security arrangements across the province, particularly in Peshawar, to ensure peaceful Muharram and Youm-e-Ashur.

He emphasised that peace, brotherhood and harmony should be promoted, adding that lasting peace and stability in KP were essential for attracting investment and creating employment opportunities.

Mr Kundi said the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in Karbala remain a symbol of truth, justice and steadfastness, adding that the event reflected patience, sacrifice, tolerance and resistance against oppression.

Mr Kundi also visited the police’s supreme command post at Kohati Gate area of city where he was briefed by the deputy commissioner Peshawar, Sanaullah, about the security arrangements.

Mr Sanaullah said that about 90 pc of processions were organised in the limits of old city. He said that at least 11,000 security personnel had been deployed in provincial capital to ensure peace during Muharram. Mr Kundi during his visit to the headquarters of Peshawar police integrated command and control system at the Malik Saad Shaheed police lines, capital city police officer Dr Mian Saeed Ahmad briefed him about the security arrangements in the provincial capital. He said that police were monitoring the processions through 600 cameras installed all over the city. Besides, he said that processions in Kohat, Hangu, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan were also being monitored through cameras.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Main mourning processions of the 9th of Muharram concluded peacefully in Dera Ismail Khan on Thursday amid stringent security arrangements.

The principal “Alam-e-Abbas” procession commenced from historic Imambargah Bammun Shah (Imam Hussain) in the morning and passed through its traditional route before concluding at Jamia Masjid Latu Faqeer (Imam Ali) at noon. Smaller processions from various parts of the city including Thala-I, Thala-II and Mohalla Qasaban joined the main procession at different points.

The main procession passed through its traditional routes including Hashmi Chowk, Hussaini Chowk, Imambargah Fazal Abbas, Imambargah Yalla Shah (Imam Zainul Abideen), Imambargah Hazrat Abbas, Haideri Chowk, Alamdar Chowk, Mohallah Dr Jalal Hussain, Alamdar Chowk, Mohallah Ghayanwala and Imambargah Haider Shah Shirazi.

Mourners recited nohas and performed matam to commemorate the martyrs of Karbala, while arrangements for sabeels, langar and distribution of refreshments were made along the procession route.

Officials said three major processions were scheduled in the city on the 9th of Muharram. Besides the Alam-e-Abbas procession, the second Tazia procession was taken out from the Liaquat Park area after 2pm which concluded at Imambargah Samandah Wala at around 4pm.

A third major mourning procession was scheduled to commence later in the night from Imambargah Bammun Shah.

Commissioner Dera Daud Khan, RPO Ghulam Mubashir Maiken and DPO Ziauddin Ahmed visited various Imambargahs, procession routes and the command and control centre to review security arrangements.
