KARACHI: A judicial magistrate on Wednesday remanded the alleged mastermind of the Rs300 million cash van heist in police custody.

The investigating officer brought the suspect, Muhammad Ali alias Ali Langra, before the judicial magistrate (Central) and sought his physical remand.

The IO informed the court that the suspect was allegedly the mastermind behind the Rs300m robbery and the ringleader of an inter-provincial gang involved in dozens of bank robberies.

He further stated that police had recovered Rs200m, along with two vehicles, from the suspect.

The IO requested the suspect’s physical remand to arrest his accomplices and recover the remaining looted money.

The court remanded the suspect in police custody for seven days and directed the IO to produce him at the next hearing along with a progress report.

According to police, on June 12, a van belonging to SOS Security Company was transporting a large amount of cash from Tariq Road to a private bank branch in Block-14 of F.B. Area, within the jurisdiction of the Jauharabad police station.

During the journey, the van’s crew made an unscheduled stop near Rizwan Park and went to a roadside restaurant for tea. Meanwhile, four robbers arrived on foot and took control of the cash van, looted Rs300m and fled.
