Shopkeepers fined for profiteering, hoarding in Lahore

LAHORE: The district administration on Monday imposed fine on shopkeepers involved in profiteering and hoarding across the city.

The administration carried out 3,245 inspections and arrested seven shopkeepers for repeated violation of official price lists. The administration said ensuring the availability of quality food items at officially-notified rates remained a top priority.

The field teams had been mobilised across the city under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner retired Capt Ali Ijaz to curb artificial inflation and enforce government price lists.

According to details, price control magistrates conducted inspections at markets and commercial centres and resorted to surprise checks and dummy purchases to identify profiteering. Action was taken against 45 outlets found involved in serious violations related to prices and quality standards.

The administration imposed fines amounting to Rs194,000, while seven violators were arrested on the spot. Warnings were issued in cases involving minor infractions.

DC Ijaz directed price control magistrates to further intensify field activities and ensure the prominent display of official rate lists at shops.

He said indiscriminate action against hoarders would continue under a zero-tolerance policy.

He warned that strict legal action would be taken against those selling substandard or expired food items, adding that no leniency would be shown to elements exploiting consumers through overcharging.
