LILLE: A woman died after reaching English waters on Sunday following an illegal crossing from France, according to British and French authorities, as well as an association that works with migrants.

The vessel she was travelling in had not sought assistance during the crossing, but British authorities intercepted it and found an unconscious passenger, they said.

“Despite medical assistance, we are deeply saddened to confirm that they have since died,” a UK government spokesperson said.

The French and British authorities did not give details on the victim, but association Utopia 56 said in a posting on X that it was a woman, without providing her age or nationality.

“This latest tragedy underlines the terrible dangers of small boat crossings. We continue to work relentlessly with the French and our partners overseas to prevent these perilous journeys,” the UK government spokesperson said.
