KARACHI, July 11: Heaps of garbage are seen everywhere in the Malir Town owing to irregular sweeping and improper disposal of solid waste by the contractors concerned. Resident of Khokhrapar, Gharibabad, Saudia Colony, Malir Colony, Liaquat Market, Jinnah Square, Jaffar-i-Tayyar have complained that the authorities were not taking interest in sanitation work.

A visit to Begum Khursheed Road, Malir City Road and Malir Extension Road revealed that garbage was accumulated on the roadsides and even the newly built roads were not properly cleaned, and trash and dirt has started accumulating along the curb stone, and the traffic lane markings have started disappearing.

Similar is the situation in each and every mohallah and the area residents blame sanitary workers for remaining absent from their duties.

According to local residents, councillors in most of the union councils had failed to maintain cleanliness in their areas after the introduction of new setup, and they stated that sanitary workers had not been given in their control owing to which they could not do anything.

Inquiries reveal that a total confusion prevailed as to who was responsible for cleanliness. While residents claim that sanitary workers remain absent from their duties, the nazims and councillors blame the Sindh government for declining strength of their staff and the contractors for the malaise as they had been failing to fulfill the job.

The town is spending huge amounts on disposal of garbage as annually each town has to pay at least four to five million rupees on privatisation of solid waste disposal system owing to flaws in the system.

Improper disposal of garbage, residents said, had been resulting in growth of germs and spread of diseases, and the authorities seemed least concerned in solving the problems of area people.

The town residents said that they had been suffering owing to the situation for the last several months, but no measures had been taken despite several complaints.

Area people complained that lifting of garbage was delayed for several days owing to which garbage stinks and spreads in the surroundings, giving an unpleasant odour all around katchra kundis. They stated that despite having town’s machinery at their disposal, the contractors failed to deliver as they do not lift garbage until katchra kundis were full.

JAAC ban

Though the JAAC’s demands are open to scrutiny, banning any political organisation — as long as it remains committed to peaceful activism — is undemocratic.
