END THE MONOPOLY: K-Electric (KE) remains the sole distributor of electricity in Karachi. This monopoly has led to prolonged loadshedding, high tariffs and limited accountability, causing severe inconvenience to the public and businesses alike. In many European countries, multiple electricity suppliers operate within the same market, giving consumers the freedom to choose their provider. This fosters competition, improves standards, and ensures fair pricing. The federal government can introduce reforms and allow multiple local and international companies to enter the electricity distribution and retail market. Opening the sector to competition may well bring transparency, efficiency and some much- needed relief to millions of households.

PUBLIC LIBRARY: In January 2013, the Sindh Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Department had initiated the Wafa Nathan Shah Public Library project. However, construction work remained suspended for years due to corruption and mismanagement. Following long struggles, protests and social media campaigns by students and civil society, the authorities decided to complete the building. Unfortunately, even though the building is ready, the library remains closed for students as books, furniture and staff have yet to be arranged. Local students and citizens have often raised their voice demanding that the library be made functional, but all such vocal public concerns have gone unheard.

EXAM SCHEDULING: It has almost become a routine that critical examinations are held around Eid holidays. Such poor planning puts students under pressure during the festive season. Moreover, it drastically affects students’ performance in exams. Students deserve a suitable timeframe for assessments to demonstrate their effective preparation; otherwise, it becomes a trap that harms young minds. Educational boards should plan date sheets more prudently and avoid examinations during important festivals.
