ISLAMABAD: The Press Association of the Supreme Court (PAS) on Monday requested Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi to order a review of steps taken by the court administration, including taking over the possession of a room dedicated for media personnel as well as restricting their easy access to enter the premises.

In a letter to CJP, PAS President Imran Waseem stated that reviewing these steps would help preserving and strengthening the cordial relationship between the association and the Supreme Court.

Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) President Afzal Butt and Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) President Asif Bashir Chaudhry on Monday reached the Supreme Court to express solidarity with the media personnel.

They suggested deferring the planned protest by stating that resolving issues through dialogue and mutual understanding has always been the best possible solution.

Later, PAS, after establishing telephonic contacts with different media organisations, and on the suggestions of the PFUJ and RIUJ presidents, announced deferment of their planned strike that included wearing black bands, hoisting black flags in different press clubs and to protest against the taking over of the press room at Supreme Court.

However, a meeting of different media associations has also been called on Wednesday at the National Press Club to chalk out a future line of action against the court administration’s decision.

PAS, however, expressed the confidence that the Supreme Court administration will reconsider their decision and remove obstacles hampering uninterrupted discharge of journalists’ professional work.
