IUB canteen sealed after student dies ‘mysteriously’

BAHAWALPUR:A student of the Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) died in mysterious circumstances at the Baghdadul Jadid campus on Monday.

According to IUB Chief Medical Officer Dr Muhammad Usman Cheema, the deceased, Tanzeel Musa (22), a second semester BBA student from Muzaffargarh district, had taken refreshments and a cold drink at the university canteen before the incident.

Dr Cheema said the student left the canteen along with three fellow students and was heading towards his destination when he suddenly collapsed. Eyewitnesses reported that he fell to the ground without any apparent cause.

He was immediately shifted to the university dispensary, where Dr Saba examined him and called Rescue 1122. Rescue personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to revive him, but were unsuccessful. The student was later shifted to Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH), where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police PRO Naeem Akhtar told Dawn that Baghdadul Jadid police reached the scene after receiving information about the incident. The body was taken into custody and shifted for a postmortem examination. He said police had initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.

According to a university press release, the administration sealed the campus canteen after receiving information that the student had consumed a cold drink there shortly before his death. The university’s chief security officer has been tasked with probing the matter.

The university administration pledged a thorough investigation into the incident. IUB Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Kamran, faculty members and staff expressed grief over the student’s death and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

RAPE BID CASE: Gaggo Mandi police have registered a case against a man of Muhammadpura locality for allegedly attempting to rape two minor boys.

The police registered the case under section 376 of Pakistan Penal Case against ‘S’ on the complaint of father of victims ‘Az’ (5) and ‘A’ (13).

The complainant ‘Af’ alleged that the suspect allured his two sons in separate incidents and attempted to rape them but the boys foiled his attempt. Police are yet to arrest the suspect.
