Yemen’s government supports Western-backed statement condemning Iran

Yemen’s foreign ministry says it “welcomes” the joint statement from 24 countries released two days ago regarding the “hostile activities” carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to Al Jazeera.

The statement — issued by the US, the UK, Australia, and a number of EU countries — “condemned the lethal plotting and other malign actions in Europe, North America and Australia by Iran’s IRGC”.

Yemen’s government opposes the Houthi rebel group in the country, which is aligned with the IRGC. In a statement released by MFA, it said that Yemen “was among the first countries to suffer from these destabilising policies through the military, financial, and technical support provided by the Iranian regime to the Houthi terrorist militia.”

It added that the IRGC should face “expanding sanctions, disrupting sources of financing and arms supplies” and called on its EU partners to designate the Houthis as a “terrorist organisation” and hold it accountable.
