SAHIWAL: Four suspects were injured in alleged encounters and arrested in Sahiwal and Jaranwala areas on Thursday.

In Sahiwal, three suspects were injured in separate encounters with the Crime Control Department (CCD) and Noor Shah Police.

According to the official version, the CCD patrol intercepted three suspects who had set up a picket near the Lower Bari Doab Canal, Chak 137/9-L, to rob villagers. On seeing the CCD, the suspects opened fire. Police retaliated, and the exchange of fire continued for 15 minutes as the dacoits took shelter in maize fields. When the firing stopped, police arrested the suspect, identified as Kamran, a resident of Noor Shah, while his accomplices, Khalid and Azhar, escaped under cover of darkness. Rescue 1122 shifted Kamran to the Sahiwal Teaching Hospital.

The CCD claimed that Constable Muhammad Ramzan was hit by a bullet but remained unharmed due to his bulletproof vest. This is a new trend in reports on ‘encounters’ given by police. Policemen are reportedly hit by the bullets but they always escape unhurt. A case was registered.

In another incident, Noor Shah Police confronted drug traffickers near Chak 73/4-R while they were going to supply narcotics.

The suspects opened fire on the police van, prompting retaliation. The exchange of fire lasted about 10 minutes. At its end, police arrested two injured traffickers, identified as Ihsan and Asher Ali Bhutto, residents of Chak 73/4-R. Their two accomplices managed to escape

TOBA TEK SINGH: Jaranwala tehsil’s Bachiana police arrested an alleged robber in an injured condition after an alleged encounter. Police said on a picket near Chak 562-GB, police signalled to stop two suspects riding a motorcycle but they opened fire on the policemen which was also returned.

In the crossfire, one of the suspects was injured by the gunshots allegedly fired by his accomplice who fled the scene. The injured suspect was identified as Naveed. He was shifted to Jaranwala THQ Hospital.
