Road safety

ROADS across Karachi have become rather unsafe. In a recent tragic collision involving a truck and motorcycles, five young lives were lost. The main causes behind these accidents are reckless driving, poor road infrastructure and inadequate enforce-ment of traffic regulations. Busy roads that are vital for commuters and students, often experience chaotic traffic conditions, especially during peak hours, putting vulnerable road users at significant risk.

Beyond the immediate physical harm, these accidents have profound sociological effects. Families suffer emotional trauma and financial hardship, while the community’s overall sense of safety is undermined. Vulnerable groups, such as students and low-income workers who rely heavily on motorcycles and public transport, are disproportionately affected. The lack of safe pedestrian crossings and proper streetlighting further restricts their mobility and access to essential services.

Measures like speed bumps, better signage and improved lighting are needed to reduce the risk of accidents. Addressing the issue is essential for not only preven- ting further loss of life, but also for fostering a safer, more inclusive society.
