TOBA TEK SINGH: Four workers were asphyxiated in the main sewerage of Allama Iqbal Industrial City in Faisalabad on Friday evening.
According to FIEDMC police, two sanitation workers, identified as Riffatullah Khan and Kifayatullah Khan, were clearing choked sewerage between industrial city gate and Green Crockery Factory when one of them became unconscious due to poisonous gases inside the 18-foot deep manhole.
The other worker raised an alarm. At this, two others, NLC contractor Haji Hassan Khan and driver Dilawar Khan, descended into the manhole to rescue their colleagues, but all four of them got stuck and were asphyxiated.
Haji Hassan was the contractor of the NLC while three others were his employees.
Sources see possibility of electrocution; probe launched
Rescue 1122 personnel pulled out the bodies of all four and shifted them to Allied Hospital.
TheFaisalabad Industrial Estate Development & Management Company (FIEDMC)general manager admin has formed a six-member inquiry committee to probe the incident.
The committee has been mandated to conduct a forensic engineering and situational analysis to establish the exact causes of the accident, evaluate the extent of the damages and enforce the liability clauses against the contractor.
It has also been tasked with fixing absolute responsibility of the personnel, supervisory staff or external entities whose negligence or breach of duty caused or contributed to this tragic mishap.
The committee shall also ensure that the financial and legal liability for the loss of lives, injuries and material damage is strictly fixed on the contractor, who shall be legally bound to pay full compensation to the families of the victims.
The committee shall complete the inquiry within seven days.
Meanwhile, some sources suggest that deaths were probably caused due to electrocution from electric wires installed inside the sewer line.
ACCIDENT: Two children died after a speeding truck hit a donkey cart near Adda Bhareri on Bhakkar Road in Athara Hazari tehsil of Jhang.
According to Rescue 1122, the truck ran over a donkey cart and two children sitting on the cart succumbed to their injuries on the spot.
They were identified as 12-year-old Mudassar Ali and 11-year-old Muhammad Zubair, who belonged to Adda Bhareri.
