ISLAMABAD: Two members of a family died while three others were injured in a gas leak explosion at a house in the capital on Friday.

The five-member family from Swabi was residing on the first floor of the house at I-10 on rent.

The explosion occurred in the kitchen after which a fire erupted and spread quickly. As a result, a 50-year-old man and his wife and their children sustained burn injuries.

Neighbours gathered around the house and informed the rescue department. Rescuers and police reached the spot and shifted the injured to hospital and extinguished the flames.

Two of the family members were pronounced dead in the hospital. The deceased were identified as Haris, 19, and Shaheer, 14.

The injured were identified as Shahid Ahmed, 50, his wife Shahzida, 50, and son Zarakh, 16. They were kept in the ICU of the hospital due to their critical condition.

The capital administration said the explosion occurred due to a gas cylinder leak. The kitchen and two adjoining rooms were affected in the incident.

Preliminary investigation suggested that the explosion occurred due to a substandard cylinder.
