KARACHI: Drivers of the Peoples Bus Service on Friday blocked the main M.A. Jinnah Road near Tower by parking their buses after some policemen beat their colleague over a minor accident.
The protest caused a traffic mess on the busy thoroughfares, forcing police to divert vehicular traffic to alternative routes.
Police said that Constable Sajid Ali of Shaheen Force was taking his minor daughters to their school in Bath Island on his motorbike when a ‘red’ bus hit the two-wheelers at around 7:45am.
Witnesses said that the constable and his daughters remained unhurt. However, an exchange of heated words took place between the policeman and the driver. Subsequently, Constable Sajid called fellow policemen from the nearby family quarters, who allegedly beat the bus driver, Samiullah. They also beat three other bus drivers when they intervened.
South DIG Syed Asad Raza said that a police inquiry showed that the accident was not the result of reckless driving or speeding.
Later, the bus drivers halted bus operations and parked the vehicles on the road.
Police rushed to the spot and persuaded the protesting drivers to end their protest. Traffic on the main road was restored within 30 minutes. Both parties were called to the Kharadar police station, where an agreement was reached under which the policeman would pay Rs10,000 as compensation.
