LAHORE, July 4: The Pakistan Railways could not achieve its budget target for 2005-06 and had a shortfall of over Rs3731 million, it is learnt. Sources told Dawn on Wednesday that the railways earned Rs18140.598 million against the budgetary target of Rs21872 million from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006.

The organisation had a shortfall of Rs243.305 million in passenger and Rs1560.258 million in freight earnings during 2005-06.

The earnings remained Rs9756.695 million in passenger and Rs4939.742 million in freight sectors against the targets of Rs10000 million and Rs6500 million, respectively.

It had a shortfall of Rs243.305 million in passenger and Rs1560.258 million in freight sectors.

However, the railways’ income in the other coaching sectors was Rs25.456 million more than the target of Rs875 million as it earned Rs900.456 million.

In the sundry sector, the organisation earned Rs1948.895 million against the target of Rs3772 million, showing a shortfall of Rs1823.105 million.

The railways proportionate actual earnings for the same period of previous fiscal year remained Rs17828.649 million.

The railways had been unable to achieve its budget target for 2004-05 and had a shortfall of over Rs838 million.

The organisation had a shortfall of Rs498.097 million in passenger and Rs340.800 million in freight earnings from July 1, 2004, to June 30, 2005.

The earnings remained Rs9001.903 million in passengers and Rs5059.200 million in freight sectors against the targets of Rs9,500 million and Rs5,400 million, respectively.
