KARACHI, July 3: The median of the newly constructed Jehangir Road has started breaking on many places due to the use of substandard construction material. It would be pertinent to mention here that after a delay of months, the Works and Service Department (WSD) had started to complete the left over work of Jehangir Road from Teen Hatti to Gurumandir.

Sources said that the contractor had left the work incomplete on Jehangir Road for months due to the negligence of the WSD of the city government.

The contractor under the supervision of works and services department had reconstructed the double-track road one year back and opened it for the traffic but other works including the final carpeting, fixing of streetlights, reconstruction of footpaths and median had not been executed.

However, on the directives of City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal the contractor started works on the incomplete project. But, due to the lack of proper monitoring and supervision by the WSD only installation of new streetlights and repairing of the median was carried out by the contractor, sources said.

Sources said that instead of using pre-cast or New Jersey barrier method, only cementing was done on the existing structure of the median. Consequently, the median has broken at many places.

The reconstruction of footpaths is yet to be started while the concerned district officer of works and services department was reluctant to take action against the contractor.—Online
