NOWSHERA: Awami National Party provincial president Mian Iftikhar Hussain has criticised the government’s economic and labour policies, saying they had pushed the working class into deeper hardship and accelerated industrial decline in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Addressing a ceremony held in Pabbi in connection with International Labour Day the other day, he said that labourers across the country were deprived of their constitutional and legal rights, while unemployment and factory closures were on the rise in the province.

“Labourers must demonstrate unity and solidarity to secure their rights, as organised struggle is the only solution to their problems,” he said.

Paying tribute to workers around the world, Mr Hussain said May 1 reminded people of the sacrifices and struggles made by labourers for their rights and dignity.

He criticised government for what he called growing industrial decline in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying factories were shutting down and unemployment was increasing at an alarming rate. “The ongoing industrial downturn in the province is directly affecting the labour class,” he added.

The ANP leader said that his party always championed the rights of labourers and consistently raised its voice for dignified employment opportunities and workers’ welfare.

Commenting on regional developments, he appreciated Pakistan’s positive role in the ceasefire between Iran and the United States, saying diplomatic efforts were essential for lasting peace in the region.

He said that ANP always opposed war and supported non-violence. He added that the land of Pakhtuns bad been suffering from conflict and insecurity for the past five decades. Questioning authorities, he asked who was responsible for eliminating terrorism and ensuring sustainable peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “Do the sacrifices and blood of Pakhtuns hold no value,” he questioned.

Mr Hussain alleged that the ongoing wave of terrorism was part of a conspiracy to seize the region’s mineral resources. He called for unity and public awareness to foil such designs.

He said that ANP would continue its struggle for the rights of people, restoration of peace and control over provincial resources.

ANP provincial general secretary Hussain Shah Yousafzai also addressed the gathering.

Among others who attended the event were ANP Nowshera general secretary Atlas Khattak, former National Assembly candidate Khan Parvez Khan, party office-bearers and representatives from different walks of life.
